My little man's room is a work in progress. We both love moving things around and he has finally embraced the practice of rotating toys to keep his space tidy and clutter-free which means things look different practically every day. My main objective when transitioning him from a nursery to a "big boy" room was to keep his space as child-friendly as possible. I started thinking about it as a "little boy" room and dropped "big" out of the equation.
My biggest source of inspiration was the montessori philosophy. Every single piece of furniture in B's room is kid's size and he has easy access to all shelves, cabinets, chairs, and his bed. This helps him become (and feel!) independent since he can take out and put away his clothes, make his own bed (or try to), reach his books and toys, and feel at ease in his space.
Since my goal was to create a montessori-inspired space, rather than a montessori space per se, I broke a few rules. Wall hangings are supposed to be hung at children's eye-level so they don't have to bend their neck and look up to enjoy them. However, since this room has a chair rail moulding, it was difficult to do this. I decided to place the wall hangings above the chair rail instead. We also ditched the mattress-only suggestion found in all montessori books and opted for a toddler bed. B can use this bed until he turns six which is when we will transition him into a "bigger boy" room.
It has been tons of fun decorating this space with B over the months since we moved to this house. He has come to appreciate his space and has learnt to take care of it. He enjoys having a "reading" corner and his own table and chairs and I love that we have managed to create a serene and meaningful space.
